Research group
The Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics conducts multidisciplinary research in Biomedicine and education within biochemistry and biophysics. Presently our department consists of 12 research divisions with a total of approximately 350 employees.
The Arenas laboratory is placed in the Division of Molecular Neurobiology, a very international, interactive, young and vibrant research environment. It hosts research groups with diverse backgrounds, creating a unique cluster with expertise in advanced genetics, cellular and molecular biology, high content single cell RNA sequencing, biochemistry, epigenetics, bioinformatics, imaging, multiple aspects of neuroscience, behavior, electrophysiology, developmental neurobiology and stem cell biology. The doctoral education project and the duties of the student
We are looking for a student with interest and experience in the areas of developmental biology, stem cell biology and molecular biology, to develop a project focusing on the development of a next-generation human pluripotent stem cell-based therapy Parkinson’s disease.
The ideal candidate should have a strong experience in culturing human pluripotent stem cells, knowledge of midbrain development and experience in using diverse molecular biology tools. The student should be capable of working both independently and in a collaborative manner, in a multinational and multidisciplinary environment. The student will participate in all research and education activities of the group, division, department and strategic research area.

Entry requirements for doctoral education at KI
To be eligible for doctoral education, the following requirements have to be met:

General entry requirements
A person meets the general entry requirements for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education (according to Higher Education Ordinance Chapt 7, section 39) if he/she:

  1. has been awarded advanced/second-cycle/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle/master level, or
  1. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.

Specific entry requirements
Proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school. Applicants who meet the general entry requirements (1 or 2 above) from a university in one of the Nordic countries fulfill the English language requirement.

Skills and personal qualities
In assessing candidates we will place particular emphasis on the motivation, personal trajectory, skills and publication track (if applicable). The applicant must have a very strong motivation to pursue challenging research and demonstrated skills in cellular and molecular biology. Publications in high profile journals and experience in working in a multidisciplinary international environment or outside of the country of origin will be considered as an advantage. The optimal candidate will be open to new ideas, flexible, engaged and goal oriented. All applicants should have good communication skills and be proficient in spoken and written English.

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. Karolinska Institutet uses the following bases of assessment:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research

- Analytical skill

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject.

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

All doctoral students at KI receive financial support during their doctoral education and employment on a doctoral studentship is the most common sort of support.
