Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för mikrobiologi, tumör- och cellbiologi

Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, translational, national and international collaborations

Division

The Center for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR) started in January 2016 as a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. The center builds on a deep understanding of translational microbiome research and has established a broad technical, biological, clinical and epidemiological platform for studying complex microbiological communities in well-defined human materials. A part of the infrastructure at Karolinska Institutet is established within the Clinical Genomics facility at SciLifeLab with access to high-throughput next generation sequencing capacity. The collaboration forms a solid foundation for understanding the contribution of the microbiome to normal physiology and pathophysiology and opens opportunities for development of novel therapies to address gastroenterology, reproductive health and neonatology.

The Center aims at creating a scientific translational environment with a broad interdisciplinary approach to the interface between clinical epidemiology and the microbiological, immunological and genetic aspects of the human microbiome and its association to health and disease.

Duties

This position involves studies of the microbiome (vaginal, as well as gut microbiome) and its relation to women’s health in broad sense and in particular reproductive health and negative events such as preterm birth. Therefore, previous work experience in these fields and knowledge regarding reproductive health is required. Knowledge about psychosocial risk factors and psychological health in pregnancy and research involving the gut brain axis is a merit. The successful applicant should aim to progress from association studies to statistically more advanced studies involving rich meta data. For this, the applicant should also have good experience in statistical methods, epidemiology as well as experience of clinical meta data.

The applicant is expected to be able to both initiate and coordinate projects independently. An important part of the work involves collaborating with experienced clinical doctors as well as with nurses and nurse-assistants to coordinate clinical sample collection. Similar experience will be valued. The applicant should be able to work independently as well as in a team. Experience in planning and coordinating clinical studies is a strong merit.

You are expected to actively seek own funding as an important step to become an independent principal investigator. Reviewing and publishing articles in international scientific journals will be expected. Teaching both undergraduate and graduate students as well as supervision of students or postdocs will also be part of the duties.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed Assistant professor if he or she has been awarded a Degree of Doctor or has achieved the corresponding scientific competence. The persons appointed should primarily be the ones who have been granted a Degree of Doctor or have reached the corresponding competence no more than seven years before the end of the application period.

Bases of assessment

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate with several years of working experience in the reproductive health science field as well as with microbiome research.

The successful applicant is also required to have experience from clinical studies (planning and coordinating). Ability to work independently with statistical analyses and software such as SPSS and Stata is a strong merit.

We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants. The successful applicant holds a doctoral degree or equivalent in medical research and has several years of working experience in the reproductive health /microbiome research field. Earlier experience from studies on pregnancy will be valued. Projects might also involve studies on the gut-brain axis in postpartum depression.

The applicant is expected to be able to manage projects independently. Emphasis will be put on personal suitability.

Merits

As the applicant will communicate with research and clinical staff including doctors as well as nurses, both English and Swedish language skills are desired.

Application process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish: Curriculum vitae, qualifications and description of planned research, presented in accordance with Karolinska Institutet’s qualifications portfolio (http://ki.se/qualificationsportfolio).
