Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

CRISPR Functional Genomics (CFG) is a core facility at Karolinska Institutet and a national SciLifeLab infrastructure. Operating within the SciLifeLab platform “Chemical Biology and Genome Engineering”, CFG's mission is to support the Swedish research community in designing, executing, and interpreting large-scale CRISPR-based functional genomic screens and precision gene-editing experiments.

Your mission

You will join our team as a Research Infrastructure Specialist. Your primary task will be to design and execute CRISPR-Cas projects in collaboration with facility clients. This includes performing precision gene editing in cell lines and primary cells, as well as conducting pooled CRISPR screens. Your main focus will be on executing and documenting experimental lab work, as well as data analysis and data reporting.

Eligibility requirements

For employment as Research Infrastructure Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements stated in the Guidelines for non-teaching positions at Karolinska Institutet are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

To be eligible for an employment as Research Infrastructure Specialist the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise and been awarded a PhD or a qualification from a foreign higher education institution deemed equivalent to a Swedish PhD. The applicant must also have demonstrated technological and methodological expertise.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Infrastructure Specialist at CFG, the applicant must:

  • Hold a PhD in Molecular Cell Biology or a related field, supplemented by postdoctoral research experience and a strong publication record
  • Have experience in contributing to a research infrastructure
  • Possess technological and methodological expertise in pooled CRISPR screening, lenti- and adeno-associated viral tool creation and application, as well as precision gene-editing
  • Be proficient in standard mammalian cell culture techniques including primary cells and stem cells
  • Have a strong background in imaging both cultured cell and tissues by fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy and slide scanning
  • Have advanced command of NGS data analysis (specifically snRNA-seq and ATAC-seq) using R and Python, and experience in image analysis
  • Be fluent in English, both spoken and written

Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria form part of the overall evaluation of the applicant’s qualifications. All criteria will be considered, but they should not individually be seen as strict requirements.

  • Experience with pooled CRISPR screens, precision genome engineering, viral delivery tools including AAV, molecular cloning techniques, flow cytometry (including cell sorting), next-generation sequencing, in vivo mouse work. As many of our projects have a neuro-focus, a background in neuroscience is meritable.
  • Expertise in bioinformatics, including analysis of complex NGS datasets (short and long read data), single cell data, as well as image analysis.
  • Strong enthusiasm for both laboratory and computational work
  • A service-oriented mindset, with a primary focus on delivering high-quality datasets
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in parallel and maintain meticulous documentation
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.

What do we offer?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. As part of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, CFG offers a dynamic work environment housed in one of Europe’s most modern research facilities. Our clients’ projects span diverse areas of molecular cell biology, from basic cell biology and molecular medicine (cancer, neurodegenerative disease, infectious disease) to model organisms such as mouse, fish and insects.

CFG actively encourages personal and professional growth through access to courses and conferences. If you thrive in an academic environment, excel in laboratory work, and have skills in computational methods, CFG is the right fit for you.
