The Department of Oncology-Pathology and the Department of Medicine, Huddinge conduct basic, translational and clinical research in a variety of areas and undergraduate and graduate education. This call is part of the KI-SciLifeLab Clinical Translational Postdoc Program with the purpose of promoting interaction between the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) research environment and clinical research environments at Karolinska Institutet. The postdocs that are recruited to the program will form a network with the support of the SciLifeLab Committee KI. The postdoctoral candidate will be placed in both departments to benefit from our collaborating research expertise and carry out an exciting project with translational aim.

The position will be jointly appointed between the Cancer proteomics Mass spectrometry research group headed by Professor Janne Lehtiö at SciLifeLab/Karolinska Institutet and the Myelodysplastic Syndromes research group headed by Professor Eva Hellström-Lindberg at Karolinska Institutet. The Lehtiö group is a translational group of scientists with a drive to improve multi-omics and proteomics analyses by developing new methods that can be applied to improve personalized cancer treatment. The Hellström-Lindberg group has a long research history on investigating the molecular pathways underlying aberrant stem cell function and ineffective cell differentiation in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) through high-throughput methods and focused functional approaches.

At present we seek to strengthen our groups’ joint focus on the translational research of MDS with an outstanding scientist with proven expertise in interpretation of hematology omics data and the investigation of primary patient samples using flow cytometry and cell sorting techniques. Your mission

We are looking for an outstanding, enthusiastic postdoc with strong analytical and laboratory skills who is working at the intersection of cancer and hematology. The aim is to generate novel knowledge about MDS biology, explore the antigen profile upon stem cell mutation and associate these findings with emerging anti-cancer therapies, particularly towards targeted immunotherapies. The postdoc candidate is also expected to be instrumental in the elaboration of hypotheses and designs to facilitate the translation of the work into new clinical initiatives.

 

Tasks for the position:

  • Drive and run proteomics and immunopeptidomics projects
  • Develop and pursue functional assays using state-of-the-art cell sorting and flow cytometry infrastructure to investigate primary patient samples
  • Establish cell models to further the functional investigation of leading candidate targets
  • Support and supervise graduate and predoctoral students
  • Apply for external funding - both national and international
  • Actively participate in academic, industry and health care collaborations involving omics -based methods to improve cancer therapy

 

Your profile

To be eligible for the postdoctoral position, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the postdoctoral education. The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

 

Qualifications

  • PhD in medicine, hematology, biology, chemistry, bioinformatics or related fields.
  • Expertise with flow cytometry for analysis of primary hematopoietic cells.
  • Previous experience in cancer research and analyses of multi-omics data.
  • Expertise in the development and pursuit of laboratory assays for patient sample analysis.
  • Acquaintance with immunotherapy concepts and neoantigen targeting.
  • Very good knowledge of cancer biology and translational cancer research.
  • Experience of collaboration between different disciplines.
  • A proven academic track record, including recent first-author publications.
  • Good knowledge of English, oral and written.

 

Additional merits

  • In-depth knowledge of NGS data, RNA-seq, single cell RNA-seq and proteomics data concepts is a plus.
  • Proficiency in programming (preferably Python, R and bash).

 

Since the position involves close interaction with several researchers, emphasis is also placed on personal skills such as:
