We are currently looking for up to 3 statisticians who wish to join our research environment at the Division of Clinical epidemiology (KEP), Department of Medicine, Solna. The positions will be embedded within CLINICUM Solna which is a node in a larger collaborate initiative between Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm aiming to facilitate clinical and translational studies in all domains of medical research (https://staff.ki.se/clinicum-common-support-structures-for-clinical-and-translational-research-within-ki-and-the).

The Division of Clinical epidemiology offers a thriving research environment with a large group of statisticians (https://ki.se/en/meds/biostatistics-at-kepcpe) and epidemiologists, linked to research groups conducting population-based epidemiology with a strong clinical anchoring.   

In addition to being part of the CLINICUM network of applied statisticians, the current positions include joining a research team with focus on a specific disease area. These areas include rheumatology, infectious diseases and gastrointestinal disorders.

Your mission

We are looking for highly motivated statisticians with curiosity for medical research and applied biostatistics. The work involves data management, study design, data analysis and interpretation of results. The successful candidates will be joining multidisciplinary teams of clinical researchers, basic scientists, statisticians and epidemiologists.

The allocation of the advertised roles in research groups and distribution of time spent in this role versus within the CLINICUM Solna network will depend on the prior experience and interest of the applicants. For experienced applicants the role can be expanded to also involve mentorship of junior statisticians and researchers as well as contributing to teaching activities.

The rheumatology team is lead by professor Marie Wahren-Herlenius and aims to identify factors underlying the step-wise development of systemic autoimmune diseases such as genetics and triggering environmental factors. The team also wants to identify predictors of disease stage progression with the overall aim to develop prevention, novel diagnostics and therapeutic approaches.

The infectious diseases team is led by Ass Prof Pontus Naucler. The group performs large-scale observational studies on several different infectious diseases, such as COVID-19, sepsis, healthcare-associated infections and antibiotic resistance.  The research is to a large extent based on data from Swedish health registers and clinical high-resolution data from electronic health records.

The inflammatory bowel disease team performs research in comparative safety and effectiveness studies of recent immunomodulatory drugs for inflammatory bowel disease. The role in this team also involves contributing to disease surveillance programs via agreements with the pharmaceutical industry concerning drug monitoring of current treatments for inflammatory bowel diseases.

Your profile

The successful applicant should have the following qualifications:

  • Candidate or master degree in statistics, mathematical statistics or medical statistics
  • At least 2 years of experience from working with medical research (academia or industry)
  • Experience of programming using statistical software, e.g. R, Stata and SAS

Practical experience from analysing observational register-based research and contributing to applied medical research is a strong merit.

The position will require interactions with researchers, clinicians, and representatives from the pharmaceutical industry; experience from these domains are considered a merit. Excellent grasp of spoken and written scientific English is essential, and strong presentation skills are preferable. Swedish skills are meriting, but not essential. In the assessment of the candidates, we place particular emphasis on interpersonal skills.

The position is located within the Department of Medicine, Solna. The department consists of twelve divisions and each division consists of several research groups.
