The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 7 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

The Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM)

BCM is one of the divisions at the Department of Laboratory Medicine and is localised at the Clinical Research Centre at the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, where a large proportion of the clinical research at this hospital site is performed. The Clinical Research Centre houses around 20 research groups with about 150 employees. The centre provides excellent and cost-effective infrastructure for biomedical and experimental clinical research.

Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM) consists of several research groups and core facilities. Activities are translational in nature and include fundamental molecular cell biology studies, pre-clinical testing of therapy/ diagnostic agents and related activities, certified production of cell products for clinical use, phenotypical analysis of cells and tissues as well as clinical studies of patients treated with cell therapy agents.

The FENO core facility
The Unit for Morphological Phenotype Analysis (FENO) was established as a competence and service facility for mouse pathology at KI in 2000, and as such specializing in the pathology of genetically engineered mice.

The increasing variety of mutant mice as potential models of disease mechanisms makes phenotypic analysis central for adequately describing the changes caused by genetic manipulation. Pathology is a major and integral part of the phenotyping process. The FENO service supports researchers with histopathology expertise and has its own histological laboratory for histotechnical support.

Advanced staining methods (multiplex chromogenic and fluorescent IHC and ISH are provided on request in addition to routine histological and histochemical stainings. State-of-the-art microscopes and imaging equipment including slide scanners and spectral fluorescent microscope are available on-site.

Position as Veterinary Pathologist (temporary)
The KI core facility for morphologic phenotype analysis (FENO) is offering a temporary position (vikariat) to a veterinary pathologist (ECVP board certified or –eligible/enrolled in a residency program) with experience in rodent pathology during the months April -December 2021. It is highly possible that the position will be converted to a standard open-ended appointment. In addition, the position can be combined with a duty of research animal veterinarian.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as core veterinary pathologist for key clients requesting this service, and as a knowledge resource for study planning with focus on histopathological analysis
  • Perform the complex microscopic evaluation and interpretation of tissue sections from study animals and correlate these findings with in vivo and necropsy findings
  • Author comprehensive pathology reports and image documentation
  • Supervise necropsies and provide scientific guidance to necropsy technicians to ensure accuracy and compliance with protocols and standard operating procedures (SOP’s).
  • Communicate the significance of pathologic findings to study directors/principle investigators

Requirements and Qualifications

  • DVM/VMD degree or equivalent
  • PhD
  • Formal pathology residency or graduate studies (i.e. MS, PhD) at an institution in which the training of veterinary pathologists is a primary function
  • ECVP board certified or –eligible candidates preferred
  • Experience in rodent pathology is a strong merit
  • Ability to evaluate tissue sections from animals, including the interpretation of histopathological findings, as well as selected special stains and procedures
  • Ability to conduct necropsies and recognize, describe and interpret findings at necropsy
  • Ability to generate complete and organized pathology reports in a digital format
  • Ability to provide scientific guidance and feedback to histology technicians to correct artifacts and prevent recurrence of technical problems, and to ensure accuracy and compliance with protocols, SOP’s and client expectations of quality histotechnology
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English and Swedish)
  • Excellent interpersonal skills

Application Process
An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
All permanent positions at KI starts with an trial-period of six months.

Location: Flemingsberg, KI South
