The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

To be a doctoral student means to devote oneself to a research project under supervision of experienced researchers and following an individual study plan. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

The research group
The Signal Transduction research group at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery is interested in complex signal-transduction in pancreatic islet cells under physiological and diabetic conditions. In recent years, the group has established the innovative and versatile platform based on islet transplantation into the anterior chamber of the eye and successfully pioneered its application in in vivo characterization of signal-transduction in islet cells and other cells.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
Insulin is central as a key-hormone in regulating glucose homeostasis. Insulin acts in mammals through the two insulin receptors IR-A and IR-B, which are alternative spliced isoforms of the IR gene. Most cells and tissues express both IR isoforms to different degrees; the classical insulin target tissues (liver, fat and some skeletal muscle fibers) have more IR-B than IR-A, neurons, embryonal and cancer cells express mainly IR-A.  Insulin resistance is a pathological condition in which cells fail to respond normally to the hormone insulin and is a hallmark of type 2 diabetes. The overall aim of the doctoral project is to find out how insulin receptor isoform expression changes during the development of obesity, insulin resistance and T2DM in different mouse tissues.
