Karolinska Institutet,

The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group

The epidemiological research at IMM is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency. The research at the Unit of Cardiovascular and Nutritional Epidemiology is based on large cohort studies with extensive questionnaire and biomarker data and aims to identify the modifiable risk factors, such as diet and lifestyle, for cardiovascular disease.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student

The research performed by the doctoral student will include studies of diet, lifestyle and other modifiable risk factors in relation to risk of venous thromboembolism and other cardiometabolic diseases. The project will utilize data from prospective cohorts and biobanks that include biomarker data and plasma proteins.

The doctoral student is expected to acquire broad knowledge and understanding of the main research fields encompassed in the thesis work including epidemiological theory and principles, exposure assessment science and principles of health risk assessment. This will be accomplished through working on the project under supervision, taking relevant courses and participate in seminars and journal clubs. The student is also expected to acquire in-depth experience in the epidemiological methods applied, statistical computation and statistical software packages such as Stata or R in processing of genomic and proteomics data. Furthermore, to develop excellent scientific writing and deliver high-quality publications in international peer-reviewed journals and give presentations at scientific meetings.
