Karolinska Institutet

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine is part of ANA Futura - KI's new research environment located in Alfred Nobel's allé 8 on Campus Flemingsberg. ANA Futura is in close vicinity of the clinics at the dental department as well as the university hospital.

Division
The Division of Clinical Microbiology is dedicated to translational research with focus on problems identified in clinical care and on the development of improved diagnostics and therapeutic approaches. The research spans from molecular virology, virus-cell interactions and the understanding of individual viral genes and proteins, to the effects these have on the infected patient.

Description of project within Annika Karlsson’s research group
The main focus of this post-doctoral position will be to conduct translational studies aiming at limiting HIV-associated and non-HIV-associated morbidity and mortality due to persistent immune exhaustion despite controlled viral replication. Specifically, our results will help to improve the guidelines for treatment selection of pregnant HIV-positive women and children. In the project T cell characteristics will be evaluated using cutting-edge instrumentation for single cell analysis, i.e. BD FACSymphony system. Furthermore, the postdoc will develop and optimize a protocol for cell sorting and transcriptional profiling in BSL2 and BSL3 facilities.

Area of responsibilities/duties
We are seeking a highly motivated early-career scientist with skills and expertise in cellular immunology, virology (e.g. HIV) and flow cytometry cell sorting, including single-cell sorts. Applicants need to demonstrate their experience in running projects independently but also have a strong disposition towards cooperation and teamwork. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are needed, as the group and work environment are international.

Qualifications

  • PhD in medicine, immunology, biology, molecular biology or equivalent
  • In depth knowledge of human cellular immunology
  • Knowledge of clinical virology
  • Experience with cell culture work and processing of blood and tissue samples
  • Experience with advanced multicolor flow cytometry acquisition and data (bioinformatics) analysis
  • Experience with flow cytometry cell sorting, including single-cell sorts
  • Experience with immunological methods including functional assays
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Fluency in the English language.

One or more of the following skills are also required:

  • Experience with work in BSL3
  • Experience with processing cells for RNA sequencing and bioinformatical analysis
  • Experience in interdisciplinary interactions with scientists and clinicians
  • Experience with in situ fluorescence staining
  • Experience with processing of tissue for single cell analysis
  • Knowledge of cancer biology and current translational cancer research

Since the position involves close interaction with several researchers, emphasis is placed on personal skills such as:

  • Very good collaborative and pedagogic skills
  • Excellent communication skills and analytical skills
  • Curious and eager to solve biological questions

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if she or he has obtained a PhD or a foreign qualification deemed equivalent to a doctorate, no more than five years before the last date of employment as postdoc. Applicants who have completed their degree no more than three years before the last date for applications will be given priority. The start date is negotiable, but the selected candidate would ideally begin as soon as possible. Applications will be evaluated as they are received.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
