A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
Research at the Unit of Epidemiology at IMM aims at improving the understanding of the effects of environmental and lifestyle factors on the risk and prognosis of disease. We put strong emphasis on the development of epidemiological theory and methods. Our research is based on the Swedish health data registers, and large cohort and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples. The Unit conducts internationally competitive research, and publishes in well-renown scientific journals. The multidisciplinary character of the department offers a stimulating, active and creative environment.

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
The research project aims at studying congenital heart disease, genetic cancer predisposing syndromes, and cancer, using information from the Swedish health data registers. The doctoral student will critically review scientific literature, formulate specific research hypotheses, prepare data for analyses, conduct statistical analyses, summarize and critically evaluate results, write scientific articles in English for publication in peer reviewed scientific journals, and present results at international scientific conferences, as well as to the general public and/or authorities.

Eligibility requirements for doctoral education

A) General eligibility requirement

You meet the general eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

• Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
The successful candidate should have a strong interest in register based research, experience from management of large data bases and programs for statistical analyses (such as SAS and/or Stata), and knowledge of epidemiological theory and methods. The candidate is required to have an education of the level stated above within a relevant area, such as medicine, public health, or epidemiology. Experience from cancer epidemiology and/or previous experience with the Swedish health care registers is a strength. We are seeking a highly motivated and creative person. The candidate should have good communication skills and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability. Excellent ability to express themselves in speech and writing in English is a requirement.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
