The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 450 employees and a revenue 2018 of 490 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

A doctoral student is admitted to third-cycle/doctoral education. A doctoral education consists of supervised research, combined with courses and other educational activities. An individual study plan is established for each doctoral student. For a doctoral degree, the equivalent of four years of full-time doctoral education is required.

Research group
The Division of Clinical Geriatrics conducts research and education focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders. The research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. Some focus areas include lifestyle factors, prevention and treatment studies, imaging methods, and registry studies.
We have a close cooperation with the Department of Geriatric Medicine at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge. The student will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Joana Pereira (main supervisor) and Assoc. Prof. Eric Westman (co-supervisor).

The doctoral student project and the duties of the doctoral student
We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work on a multimodal neuroimaging project in Alzheimer’s disease. The project will involve combining different imaging modalities from structural and functional MRI as well as PET imaging to assess changes in the brain connectome. These changes will be analyzed using tools from graph theory in patients at different disease stages. The person is expected to take an active role in applying imaging methods, develop ideas and new functionalities for some of our brain imaging softwares.

A) General eligibility requirement

  1. have been awarded a second-cycle/advanced/master qualification (i.e. master degree) or
  2. have satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the advanced/second-cycle/master level, or
  3. have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad.*

B) Specific eligibility requirement

You meet the specific eligibility requirement for doctoral/third-cycle/PhD education if you:

  • Show proficiency in English equivalent to the course English B/English 6 at Swedish upper secondary school.

Skills and personal qualities
The candidate must have a master's degree in medicine, physics, psychology, statistics, neuroscience, engineering or a related field. He or she should have a strong and documented interest in neurodegenerative disorders and/or neuroimaging techniques. We are looking for an individual that can actively contribute with own ideas and proposals for studies. Proficiency in oral and written English is necessary. Strong programming skills, good knowledge of Matlab, and experience with SPM, FSL and FreeSurfer softwares are a plus.

Terms and conditions
The doctoral student will be employed on a doctoral studentship maximum 4 years full-time.
