Karolinska Institutet, Department of NVS, Aging research center

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
Aging Research Center (ARC), Department of NVS, Karolinska Institutet (www.ki-su-arc.se) is a multidisciplinary academic environment located in KI’s Solna campus. We conduct research in psychology, sociology, and various branches of medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, and geriatrics). Much of our research is based on population-based longitudinal studies. In the ongoing Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K), a large population of people 60+ years (n = 3363) is followed at regular intervals. The protocol includes extensive assessment of social, biological, and genetic factors and a comprehensive medical and neuropsychological examination. A subsample (n = 552) also undergoes structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A key focus of SNAC-K is identifying genetic, biological, and psychosocial determinants of major chronic disorders in late life. For further information, see www.aldrecentrum.se/snack/ and http://www.snac-k.se/. This postdoc position will be located in the Aging Research Center (ARC) and is time-limited for a period of one year.

Duties
We are looking for a qualified and dedicated postdoc with experience in research who will conduct research on questions regarding compensatory mechanisms against dementia in metabolic disorders. The postdoc will be involved in all aspects of the research including developing novel research hypotheses, conceptualizing study designs, reviewing the literature, as well as conducting data analyses, interpreting the results, and disseminating those results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The position provides an excellent opportunity for transition to career independence, including master/PhD student supervision and an individual development plan to support training goals. Teaching graduate course on geriatric epidemiology and/or master's program are also included in the tasks.

Entry requirements
Applicants should have a PhD in geriatric epidemiology, psychology, or a related field with a promising publication record. The candidate should have a background in neuropsychology or cognitive psychology, previous knowledge on metabolic diseases (particularly diabetes), and experience with statistical software (for example SPSS and/or Stata). Documented experience with handling longitudinal data in aging research is especially desirable as well as the ability to work well within a team and display high interpersonal skills, because a large part of the research will be carried out in cooperation with other team members. Excellent oral and written English language skills are preferable. Emphasis will be placed on personal suitability.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
