Karolinska Institutet,

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

Research group
The Integrative Physiology research group at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery at Karolinska Institutet is seeking two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join the group of Professors Juleen Zierath and Anna Krook. The research is focused on translational studies on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and the positive effects of physical exercise on glucose and lipid metabolism in skeletal muscle. The candidates will join our research group and work on projects focused on the identification and biological validation of key regulatory metabolic pathways that contribute to the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Postdoc #1

Duties
The candidate will work on the regulation of insulin sensitivity specifically in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue but also on a whole-body level using several model systems. Projects cover disease mechanisms as well as protocol and assay development.

Other requirements
Expertise and research experience in cell biology and molecular biology. A clinical background and previous work with clinical studies are highly desired. Research experience in cell culture is also valuable, particularly primary cultures are useful. The candidate must be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills and be able to take the lead on projects. Some knowledge of spoken Swedish would be advantageous for contact with research subjects. We are looking for a cooperative candidate who thrives to work with others. The candidate will join an enthusiastic, collaborative, hardworking and dynamic team.

Postdoc #2

Duties
The candidate will work on the regulation of insulin sensitivity in insulin sensitive tissues with a special emphasis on tissue crosstalk. Work will be performed in isolated tissues as well as in a whole-body setting using several model systems. Projects cover disease mechanisms as well as protocol and assay development.

Other requirements
Expertise and research experience in animal physiology, cell biology and molecular biology. Previous work with rodent phenotyping is a requirement. Research experience in cell culture is also valuable, particularly primary cultures is useful. The candidate must be fluent in English, have excellent writing skills and be able to take the lead on projects. We are looking for a cooperative candidate who thrives to work with others. The candidate will join an enthusiastic, collaborative, hardworking and dynamic team.

Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.

A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
