The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.
Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.
Research group
The Hedlund laboratory (https://ki.se/en/neuro/hedlund-laboratory) is focused on elucidating mechanisms of neuronal vulnerability and resilience with the goal of identifying new molecular targets for the lethal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Towards this goal, we conduct single cell RNA sequencing on tissues (LCM-seq) and on stem-cell derived neurons to dissect molecular pathways activated in response to disease in distinct motor neuron populations. Motor neuron cultures derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) harboring disease-inducing mutations are coupled with microfluidics to model ALS and to study the transcriptome of axons. Finally, we modulate gene expression in vitro and in vivo to induce motor neuron protection and axonal regeneration.
Duties
We now have an opening for a postdoctoral position in a project focused on modeling ALS in vitro using hiPSCs and inducing protection. We are looking for a highly motivated scientist who can collaborate well with others and who has a PhD in neuroscience, stem cell biology or developmental biology. The applicant should have experience in one or more of the following areas: human induced pluripotent stem cells, ALS research, bioinformatics, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing and confocal or live-imaging techniques.
Entry requirements
Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate.
The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.
Type of scholarship
The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable. This educational scholarship is tax-exempt.
