The department of Biosciences and Nutrition (BioNut) is looking for a Professor in Bioinformatics. BioNut provides an attractive environment for research in medical and molecular genetics with close connections to the hospital (K) in Huddinge and supporting infrastructures. The department resides in the new biomedical research building Neo, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The main area of expertise is bioinformatics as this competence is needed more and more due to the accumulation of large-scale datasets in genomics.

Your mission will be:

  • to carry out and lead excellent research in bioinformatics, taking advantage of large-scale patient genomics datasets, with independent responsibility for research funding
  • to be active in high quality research education and undergraduate teaching at Bionut and KI
  • to lead the development in the bioinformatics area at BioNut and KI campus South, and advise our local core facility in genomics at BioNut (BEA).

The successful candidate is thus expected to strengthen and develop the field of bioinformatics at the department and at KI with his or her strong expertise. It is expected that the Professor will take responsibility for the management of her/his research group and is able to contribute to teaching at the department.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor the applicant must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, development and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The successful candidate should have a well-documented background in human genomics research with specialization in bioinformatics, and substantial experience of analysis of large-scale genomic data. The candidate should have a proven track record of clinical collaboration as well as of international collaborative projects in the genomics area.

Bases of assessment

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, KI will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
