The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.
Division
The Cardiovascular Medicine unit combines research in human biobanks with in-vitro and in-vivo methods for translation of observational data to molecular mechanisms underpinning cardiometabolic conditions such as aneurysms, atherosclerosis, arterial thrombosis, diabetes and liver diseases.
Duties
The unit leads the international SCALLOP consortium of academic and industry researchers working on population cohorts with large-scale proteomics and human genetics data. SCALLOP aims to identify novel pQTLs i.e. gene variants regulating expression of circulating proteins measured using the Olink PEA technology, and to quantify their impact on human disease and molecular phenotypes. SCALLOP (www.scallop-consortium.com) is the largest effort undertaken so far to investigate the impact of genetics on the circulating proteome.
The successful candidate will carry out a research programme aimed at discovery of new disease mechanisms by applying Mendelian randomization, with the ultimate goal to establish causality in disease for protein biomarkers. Further analyses using publicly available data as well as data from in-house biobanks including transcriptomics, methylation and metabolomics will establish basic understanding of mechanisms underpinning the association. Translational studies of novel mechanisms may be carried out in collaboration with other unit teams with expertise in e.g. gene editing. The research programme is carried out together with Pfizer Worldwide Research & Development.
Entry requirements
Applicants should have a PhD in biostatistics, epidemiology, computer science or related disciplines and have experience working and doing research in complex diseases. Experience with tools such as SAS, SPSS, Plink and/or GCTA is highly desirable as well as strong familiarity with the Linux environment and Perl, Python and SQL. The applicant should have excellent communication skills in written and spoken English and is expected to be experienced in working in “team science” contexts and possess organizational skills. Ability to describe past examples of having developed structured approaches to solving unanticipated and complex problems is also expected. Individuals eligible to be employed as a postdoctoral researcher should have completed their PhD studies within the last three years. Individuals who graduated earlier may be considered under special circumstances.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence.
