The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR)
Karolinska Institutet and five other Swedish universities are building a National E-infrastructure for Aging Research (NEAR) with the ultimate goal of facilitating aging research in Sweden, fostering international collaboration, and enhancing the quality and impact of scientific research. Ultimately, by empowering aging research in Sweden, NEAR will contribute to identifying sustainable intervention strategies that will help to achieve better health and care for older adults. NEAR consists of 15 databases derived from longitudinal cohort studies located in different geographical areas in Sweden.      

Division
The position of scientific communicator is announced by the Aging Research Center (ARC), where NEAR is located. ARC is a center for interdisciplinary scientific research on health in aging that is grounded in collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. The research group includes senior researchers, postdocs, doctoral students, and guest researchers, and it provides a vibrant and stimulating working atmosphere. The available position is for one year, possibly longer.

Duties
The person appointed to this position will play a central role in the NEAR team and will be responsible for all activities that promote NEAR research and increase the visibility of the infrastructure to the national and international scientific community, government officials, and the general public. The scientific communicator will be responsible for (1) producing and distributing written material, (2) communicating with staff and users to keep them abreast of important updates, (3) maintaining content on the NEAR website, and (4) producing social media content. You will also be responsible for arranging and coordinating various projects and meetings.

Entry requirements
We are looking for a scientific communicator to join the NEAR team. We need a person who is well-organized and has a scientific background. The ideal candidate also has a strong interest in science, wants to help scientists establish larger multidisciplinary collaborations, and enjoys disseminating and implementing research findings outside academia.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • At minimum a bachelor’s degree in communications, public health/social science, or achievement of the corresponding scientific competence.
  • Experience in a research environment, preferably in the field of aging research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Swedish and the ability to communicate technical topics at an appropriate level to a wide range of audiences, including scientists, the lay public, students, and politicians.

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Master’s or doctoral degree in communications, public health/social science, or achievement of the corresponding scientific competence.
  • Experience in developing content for the web, social media, and print media.
  • A polished and professional demeanor, strong interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to adeptly and effectively interact with a diverse community of scientists and administrative staff.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary context, multicentre projects, and a creative and dynamic scientific setting.
