The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). Division
The position is in the biostatistics group, which at present comprises of around 45 people, including 1 senior professor, 3 professors, 4 senior lecturers, postdocs, applied biostatisticians and PhD students. The primary activities of the biostatistics group include (i) own research, with a strong methodological component, in population-based studies, and in genetic and molecular epidemiology, (ii) collaboration with researchers in epidemiology, biomedicine and clinical science, and (iii) biostatistics teaching both at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Duties
The Department wants to strengthen the faculty and recruit a world-class researcher in biostatistics. The successful candidate is expected to initiate, perform and lead research, supervise PhD candidates, participate in teaching and in exam settings, and carry out administrative duties in accordance with the needs of the department and of Karolinska Institutet. The ability to successfully obtain external research funds is important. 

Entry requirements
All professors at Karolinska Institutet must demonstrate scientific as well as pedagogical competence. The eligibility requirements for appointment as a professor at KI are specified in the "Appointment procedure for teachers at Karolinska Institutet".

To qualify, the applicant must be an established independent researcher in biostatistics, statistics or a related discipline. She/he must have a strong research record of both applied and methodological statistics, together with a strong interest in biology, medicine, epidemiology and/or public health, and she/he must have excellent pedagogical skills. The candidate is expected to be one of the future leaders of biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet, so should show well-documented leadership and collaboration experience. Applicants must have been the principal recipient of research funding granted in national or international competition during the last five-year-period.

Bases of assessment
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

The applicant must have undergone 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. A person appointed as a Professor but lacking training in higher education teaching must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the candidates merits and expertise Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities.
