The Department of Medicine at Huddinge comprises seven units, three research centers and, around 70 independent research groups. The Center for Infectious Medicine (CIM) is a research unit within the Department of Medicine Huddinge with a focus on translational studies of the human immune system and infection-immunity in humans. CIM has since its inauguration in 2002 rapidly grown and gained national and international recognition. The vision is to become one of the leading translational research centers within immunity and infectious diseases in Europe.

Research group
The research group where the announced position will be placed is headed by Tim Willinger and studies immune responses in the mucosal tissues gut and lung (http://ki.se/en/medh/tim-willinger-group). We are investigating how the immune system helps maintain healthy organ function and how disturbed immune function causes chronic tissue inflammation. Our studies focus on two types of tissue-resident immune cells that carry out specialized functions to maintain organ homeostasis: Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) and macrophages. To make our studies relevant to humans, we have developed innovative models that allow us to study the cells and function of the human immune system in vivo (Nature Biotechnology 32:364, 2014).

Projects
Innate lymphoid cell migration
ILCs are a recently described family of immune cells that are enriched in tissues interacting with the outside world. We are particularly interested in how ILCs migrate within the body and to sites of inflammation, see our recent publication (Immunity 48:120, 2018). The project’s main focus is to explore the link between human ILC migration, ILC function, and organ homeostasis in the lung in steady-state and inflammation.

Development and function of human macrophages
Macrophages are the most abundant immune cells in the airways. Due to their strategic location, they protect us from airborne pathogens, while performing tissue repair after injury or infection. However, not much is known about the development and function of lung macrophages in humans. To overcome this limitation, we have created a unique model to study human macrophages in vivo (PNAS 108:2390, 2011; Nature Biotechnology 32:364, 2014).

Duties
The successful candidate is expected to play a leading role in experimental design, experimentation, analysis, and presentation/publication of results.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible for a position as Postdoctoral Researcher if he or she has obtained a PhD no more than seven years before the last date of employment as postdoc.

To qualify, the applicant must have publications in internationally peer-reviewed journals. Merit is given to applicants who are experienced in multicolor flow cytometry and functional immunological assays. Great advantage is experience in designing and performing animal experiments and previous work with genetically-modified mice.

The candidate should be a talented and highly motivated researcher, have good communication skills, and ability to interact effectively and work productively in a team. Fluency in English is a requirement. Emphasis will be placed on scientific track record as well as personal suitability.
